The following are just of some kids on my street taking advantage of the fire hydrant water on a scorching summer day. These kids are all absolutely adorable and I had a great time photographing them for about two hours or so. I tried my best to stay dry but they totally soaked me!

Fields of Flowers

I couldnt sleep last night. My mind just keeps racing, my body stays awake, it's 100 plus degrees in our apartment with no air conditioning and I couldn't breathe. I got in my car and drove and drove and drove, something I haven't done in months. As the sun was coming up I finally turned around, after 4 hours of driving. I saw these flowers right before I got back on the highway in the direction of Brooklyn. I had to stop to capture them and because I only have a 24mm lens I had to walk allllll the way through a field for this. It was worth it.

This portrait is totally impromptu but I saw the lighting on them and loved it. I used my SB-800flash and my SB29 extended to the upper right side of them, and two fill cards. This was the only photo in the group where it seems like my siblings traded personalities. Richie is always the goofy, Jim Carrey-esque one, while Noelle is more laid back and chill. I know you're supposed to differentiate between "good" pictures and "emotional" pictures, but sometimes, they are just one in the same.

Before I left the next morning my Grandmother and I went out to eat. This woman means the world to me, and is the one who just bought me my new D3. I have nothing but love and admiration for her, and I always have, regardless of fancy expensive presents. She won't let me take photos of her, so I just held the camera on the table and shot when she wasn't noticing.. they came out pretty good ;D

That Night I went to Point Pleasant Beach, which is where the boardwalk is, and where my other Grandfather has a house. I have never in all of my life (I've been coming here since I was in my mother's stomach) I have never seen the boardwalk so desolate. I'm absolutely exhausted. I just got home from working 14 hours straight with a 30 minute break and only 2 cigarettes allllll day. I just moved into this new apartment in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, and all of my new roommates and their friends were hanging out so I was naturally compelled to show my face and hang out for a while. Of course I used the time to shoot more (I love my new camera, I CAN'T stop).

Concrete Alchemy

Concrete Alchemy; A group of 15 visual artists called Concrete Alchemy painted the wall on Water Street (@ Pearl St) in Dumbo, Brooklyn, on Thursday and Friday, working steadily both days to complete the 15' H x 50' W wall mural. After collaborating for over 20 hours between the two days of painting, they also took time to do a public discussion panel on the benefits of graffiti; and how if used correctly can serve as beautiful art for the people. I was lucky enough to spend a few hours photographing them on assignment from my boss.

these are all macro images, 4:1 or 5:1, so technically micro and way beyond lifesize.
shot on a d200 with a 60mm macro lens, an extension tube, and pb-5 bellows,
and assorted speedatron lights and fill cards. try and guess what they are!

1. a small dental tool with the mirror on one end. you can see three triangle ridges in the shot, across the actual tool there is 19 of them, and the tool is the size of my pinky. i hope that gives you an idea to how close up these are.

2. a coffee bean! the black line on the bottom is actually the ridge that goes across the middle of the coffee bean, although you can't see into it. so it's essentially just a sliver of the middle of it

3. a close up of a yellow shirt, where you cannot see any white thread, or any individual thread at all for that matter.

4. a close up of a block of cascade dishwasher detergent. it was supposed to be brand new, clean, and sterile, too. gross.

last week jennifer and i trecked around the zoo to make a slideshow with full audio and photographs for john's multimedia class. it's the winter so a lot of the exhibits are closed, but it was still lots of fun. the point of the assignment was to tell a narrative through ambient noise and no interviews, and of course photographs to help guide the story.

Another macro photograph that I just got done shooting a few hours ago in the studio, and i put an orange cloth to the side for a little extra color cast/gelling. These are some fake decorative grapes around a wine bottle lamp Jenn's mom gave me for Christmas. Up close it's all glitter, beads, and other sparkly stuff, although you would never be able to tell from just looking at it normally.

Old beer caps I saw lying around and just shot on a d200 with the 105mm & extension tube for 1:1 macro again. I used two hot lights on either side of the caps for overall light, fill cards below and above for light to come straight down on it and to also surround the edges for (more) even shadows. f22 @ 10 seconds, iso 100

one speedotron from the top right coming down on that side of his head, one more on the left side doing the same but had a small gobo to only let 1/2 light on, the third light on the left coming at his face, one more at the bottom by his feet with a gobo blocking most of the light, also had a grid in the top left one and bottom left one. the dunny is really metallic and extremely hard to light, it's like lighting glass with the reflections. had to go a lot of blocking off light with other assorted gobo's and reflectors and fill cards.

yeah, so wow. focus on macro is most definitely crucial. but let me say i was at school 13 hours today, on a very very swollen and probably broken or sprained foot walking around in the studio shooting most of the day (but i also got in a chair with wheels and rolled around, hah). due for critique tomorrow morning, and then i'm going to the doctors. you could say i like macro, and lighting metal was a piece of cake (thank you kevin). it's really nice to be able to take your time in the studio and not be rushed, i'm having fun playing.

Okay, I changed my mind and found this set and decided I liked it a little better. Shot at the old abandoned Castle in Chapel Hill that is totally haunted. The film at the bottom are the original negatives. The first negative, the lighter one, is overexposed at 250th of a second. The bottom one, the under exposed one, is at 1/60th of a second. There's reciprocity in action

spent a few hours shooting this trying to get the sky to show the approaching storm. stitched together from 78 nikon raw images. i spent over 20 hours cloning, masking, et cetera, to get everything to line up right, because on each image you shoot you overlap 25% of the last frame. went across on the sky, then went across on the buildings and grass, and stitched it together up and down as well. i'm pretty psyched about it, this is definitely the hardest i have ever worked on one project

one of my dear friends, miss pallie nardali, was nice enough to pose for me outside of the uncg campus this morning for my environmental portrait. i used a fill card on the side of her face and a off camera flash for the set up. i only took four picture and this was my overall best.... probably need to reshoot to get more even lighting because of the sun through the trees.

a photograph from summer semester for our large format portfolio. this is a 4x5 kodak e100g film negative scanned in. absolutely no photoshopping. i scheimpfluged the front standard of the camera while keeping the rear standard level to get the window distortion. the hardest part was standing with a 20 pound camera + tripod on a floor that has (obviously) sunk into itself, while also getting the sun leaking through the roof while keeping everything level. and if you've ever shot on a large format sinar camera, you know it's hard enough to keep it level on concrete.

this was for our last portrait assignment. we were to have a female and male model and to take 12 poses of each; 6 feminine and 6 masculine. point of the project was to notice subtle body changes with emphasis on the three main forms of lines bodies make, "i," "c," and "s," shapes. first two of sarah are masculine "c" and masculine "s" shapes. first two of matt are masculine "c" and masculine "i". last two are feminine "s" and feminine "c".

family photographs passed down to me. my grandfather took a lot of photographs during world war II while he was mostly stationed in panama. no one else in my family knows the difference between a point and shoot and film, so i'd like to credit him with my interest in photography. all of these were scanned by mattbell, who is too good of a friend to me. thanks bro. if my apartment caught on fire, these would be what i would grab on my way out the door.

(the back of the print is a love poem my grandfather wrote for my grandmother on her birthday. "a lily for my love" is the title. talk about romantic. and please note the detail and focusing in this photograph, it is beyond amazing, it is beyond beautiful, it is beyond perfect.)

Environmental Portrait

for our photojournalism class we are required to take an environmental portrait of someone in the medical field. my photo isn't nearly as strong as i'd like it to be, but i'll post my reshoot when i get to it. i had exactly a minute and a half to set up (two white lightnings on light stands, take a meter, get my off camera flash and camera on and set to the right stops, etc) and spent about 30 seconds photographing her. it was a good experience, i feel like i did okay for getting four pictures, setting up, and breaking down, in under five minutes flat. i like the catch lights in her eyes, but i wish i would of had something more related to eye care than whatever that machine is next to her. oh well, there is always reshoots.

my model was Chablis Love, an Optometrist at Randleman Optics.

friday night football take one

these were shot last night for my photojournalism class we're required to shoot friday night football. please do not judge harshly, this was my first game. the object of the ass't is to capture the dude with the ball, anyway you can. it's incredibly dark out, it's freezing, you have to be on the sideline where the players run off and have to watch out you don't get tackled, & the players are moving really fast. it's grainy and automatically ugly because of the direct-on-camera flash & super high iso.

our windowlight assignment, one of of the first ones from last semester. this shot looks simple, which to some degree it was because of the easy natural light from one window and two fill cards. however, the manual focusing was ridiculous. i would focus on the straws on the bottom on each side then change to get the top straw down too.

one of our last assignments for biocommunication object lighting. chocolate was a lot harder to shoot than i thought. i did multiple set-ups but kevin, my teacher, advised me to go with this one. thanks to my parents for being caterers and teaching me how to make food look presentable, hah.
