i know this is probably a little more than any of you wanted to see; but i am getting ready to take an internship doing autopsy work. i figured i needed to practice with appropriate lighting for skin to show texture. this is therefore side lit from above on the right. thanks to tj for being strong enough to peel back his burn just to let me photograph it.

Macro Week 5

i'm an avid toothbrusher and because of it, have to update my toothbrushes almost monthly. i decided to shoot my last toothbrush before parting ways and replacing it.

Take Your Best Guess!

these are all macro images, 4:1 or 5:1, so technically micro and way beyond lifesize.
shot on a d200 with a 60mm macro lens, an extension tube, and pb-5 bellows,
and assorted speedatron lights and fill cards. try and guess what they are!

1. a small dental tool with the mirror on one end. you can see three triangle ridges in the shot, across the actual tool there is 19 of them, and the tool is the size of my pinky. i hope that gives you an idea to how close up these are.

2. a coffee bean! the black line on the bottom is actually the ridge that goes across the middle of the coffee bean, although you can't see into it. so it's essentially just a sliver of the middle of it

3. a close up of a yellow shirt, where you cannot see any white thread, or any individual thread at all for that matter.

4. a close up of a block of cascade dishwasher detergent. it was supposed to be brand new, clean, and sterile, too. gross.

Our Classes are Much More Fun Than Yours

last week jennifer and i trecked around the zoo to make a slideshow with full audio and photographs for john's multimedia class. it's the winter so a lot of the exhibits are closed, but it was still lots of fun. the point of the assignment was to tell a narrative through ambient noise and no interviews, and of course photographs to help guide the story.

All That Glitters Is Not Gold

Another macro photograph that I just got done shooting a few hours ago in the studio, and i put an orange cloth to the side for a little extra color cast/gelling. These are some fake decorative grapes around a wine bottle lamp Jenn's mom gave me for Christmas. Up close it's all glitter, beads, and other sparkly stuff, although you would never be able to tell from just looking at it normally.

Bottlecaps

Old beer caps I saw lying around and just shot on a d200 with the 105mm & extension tube for 1:1 macro again. I used two hot lights on either side of the caps for overall light, fill cards below and above for light to come straight down on it and to also surround the edges for (more) even shadows. f22 @ 10 seconds, iso 100

Dunny

one speedotron from the top right coming down on that side of his head, one more on the left side doing the same but had a small gobo to only let 1/2 light on, the third light on the left coming at his face, one more at the bottom by his feet with a gobo blocking most of the light, also had a grid in the top left one and bottom left one. the dunny is really metallic and extremely hard to light, it's like lighting glass with the reflections. had to go a lot of blocking off light with other assorted gobo's and reflectors and fill cards.

yeah, so wow. focus on macro is most definitely crucial. but let me say i was at school 13 hours today, on a very very swollen and probably broken or sprained foot walking around in the studio shooting most of the day (but i also got in a chair with wheels and rolled around, hah). due for critique tomorrow morning, and then i'm going to the doctors. you could say i like macro, and lighting metal was a piece of cake (thank you kevin). it's really nice to be able to take your time in the studio and not be rushed, i'm having fun playing.

Okay, I changed my mind and found this set and decided I liked it a little better. Shot at the old abandoned Castle in Chapel Hill that is totally haunted. The film at the bottom are the original negatives. The first negative, the lighter one, is overexposed at 250th of a second. The bottom one, the under exposed one, is at 1/60th of a second. There's reciprocity in action

spent a few hours shooting this trying to get the sky to show the approaching storm. stitched together from 78 nikon raw images. i spent over 20 hours cloning, masking, et cetera, to get everything to line up right, because on each image you shoot you overlap 25% of the last frame. went across on the sky, then went across on the buildings and grass, and stitched it together up and down as well. i'm pretty psyched about it, this is definitely the hardest i have ever worked on one project
